Delta Municipality is a municipality in the Region of Central Macedonia. It was established in 2011 under the Kallikratis program. It resulted from the merging of the three pre-existing municipalities of Echedoros, Chalastra and Axios. It occupies an area of 308.88 sq.km and its permanent population, according to the 2011 census, amounts to 44, 935 inhabitants. The municipal seat is Sindos where the Industrial Area of Thessaloniki and the International University (former ATEI of Thessaloniki) are located.
Within the administrative boundaries of the municipality of Delta there is an extensive wetland, natural ecosystem of spectacular natural beauty, integrated in the Natura 2000 areas. Within the administrative boundaries of the Municipality of Delta are included 158,000 acres of the total 300,000 acres of the total Natura area. This unique ecosystem is an extensive coastal route of 28 km. from Kalochori Lagoon to the estuary of the Axios Delta, where wildlife declares its presence and summarizes the authentic natural beauty of the west side of the coastal zone.
80% of the total Greek rice production is produced in the areas of the Municipality of Delta, as well as in Halastra and Axios near the estuaries of the three rivers. In addition, 80-90% of the national production in mussels – about 30,000 tons of high-quality mussels per year, of which 95% are exported- are produced in the Thermaic Gulf.
Based on data from the Association of Industries of Northern Greece (SVBE) and ETVA-VIPE SA, 846 companies have been registered in the industrial area of Thessaloniki in Sindos, while about 450 companies operate in the informal industrial concentration (ABZ) of Kalochori. These companies together produce about 45% of the country’s industrial GDP.
In the area of Diavata in the Anagnostopoulou camp, an Open Temporary Reception Structure has been operating since 2016.
