Context
The Migrant Integration Center (KEM) of the City of Athens, with the aim of supporting migrants and refugees living in Athens to successfully pass the examinations for acquiring Greek introduced by the law of October 2020, offers free preparation seminars with the support of volunteers.
Candidates for the Certificate of Knowledge Adequacy for Naturalization (P.E.G.P.) issued by the Ministry of Interior, are examined in Greek with emphasis on the understanding and production of oral and written language, as well as the following topics: Geography, History, Culture and Political Institutions of Greece.
Upon obtaining the certificate, the candidates, go through a short interview to evaluate their social and economic integration.
Description
The initiative begun in 2021, with the award-winning author Soti Triantafyllou, the theater school “Theater of Changes” and other volunteers, providing the preparatory seminars for the exams. The volunteers group ”Gefyres” are currently the main partners of KEM.
Since September 2022, the initiative has been strengthened with the support of the UNHCR, in the context of its wider cooperation with the City of Athens.
The exams are held twice a year, in May and November.
